Barbara Probst

Kuckei + Kuckei is very pleased to announce their fourth solo exhibition with Barbara Probst in Berlin.

The new works by Barbara Probst are once again involved with the concept of simultaneity: multiple cameras, all focused on a particular scene are each connected through a radio control system and release at the same moment. Barbara Probst puts the resulting photographs together as multi-part works, which seem to the viewer to be both simultaneous and sequential. The individual pictures in these sequences appear to be contradictory and antithetical to one another and provoke the viewer to rethink the subjectivity of looking and being looked at.

Barbara Probst uses familiar images and picture strategies such as fashion shoots, surveillance videos, advertising photography, Paparazzi shots, postcard pictures, tourist snapshots, landscape photography, street photography and portraits. In her studio works she uses large backdrops, which act like a physical analogy to digital picture editing. The surface of the photograph and the depth of that which is photographed seem to become intertwined. Still there is always a clue to the presence of the model before a backdrop which indicates the spatial depth of the subject. In her New York street works Barbara Probst uses a related strategy of inversion of figure and ground in a highly image mediated and overly depicted city. Her multiple images convey the impression of accidentally stepping onto a movie set and turning from observer to observed.
